Monthly Wrap Up: December 2022

The end of 2022 included some excellent reading and some not so great books that I still finished. Overall, 2022 was an amazing reading year and December was a great example of the variety of books found in my reading life for the year.

HIGHLIGHTS

The standouts for December were three different genres spanning nonfiction, poetry and fiction, and they were all by women authors.

Tiny Beautiful Things by Cheryl Strayed had been on my TBR list for a long time. I finally picked it up when Reese Witherspoon chose it for her book club to highlight the 10th anniversary edition. This book was excellent, but I had held off on reading it because I knew it dealt with some heavy emotional topics. It was well worth reading even with the often difficult subject matter. Strayed’s honesty and humor was refreshing and even shocking a few times. Highly recommend!

And Yet by Kate Baer is a pre-order that I was really looking forward to reading. I love her poetry and this one was no exception. There are always a few poems that really speak to me from her collections as well. She’s a great follow on instagram and I recommend reading all of her poetry collections.

The Marriage Portrait by Maggie O’Farrell was another Reese’s Book Club pick that I chose to read. I read this one on my kindle since I’m finding fiction easier to read that way. The cover is striking and I enjoyed this book quite a bit. If you enjoy history, women’s stories and nobility, this is a great one to pick up. I have been listening to the Noble Blood podcast hosted by Dana Schwartz (an author in her own right) for a while and think it pairs nicely with this novel.

I read some other books for various book clubs that were just okay, but I enjoyed the variety. It’s nice to branch out and read books that I might not have chosen myself, and I love discussing them with other readers. I’m 100% sure cozy mysteries are not for me after reading Wed, Read & Dead by V.M. Burns, but I’m sure others love this series and I’m happy for them!

The busyness of the holiday season, year end at work and kicking off a new year has left me pretty drained no matter how much I tried to balance things. I still read some great books including a few holiday reads, but didn’t finish all the ones I had hoped. There’s always next year!
